The IRS S-corporation compensation page says reasonable compensation depends on the services provided and the source of gross receipts. It lists training, duties, time and effort, dividend history, payments to other workers, bonus timing, comparable pay, compensation agreements, and formula use among the relevant factors.
How can public wage data help?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics by occupation and area. Its percentile guide defines the 25th percentile, median, and 75th percentile as points in the wage distribution. A benchmark can match each material duty to an occupation, assign documented hours, and cite the exact area table and release.
Why is the result a range before it is a figure?
A wage table does not know the owner's experience, hours, revenue-producing role, staff support, or capital in the business. The range is the source evidence. A documented figure requires the questionnaire and a written reconciliation of those facts. The CPA uses that file with the tax and payroll record and decides the amount.
